Frank Vogel joins the Mavericks

Frank Vogel spent little time without work. Fired by the Phoenix Suns to give way to Mike Budenholzer, the one with whom he was champion of the Los Angeles Lakers ring. In 2020 he joined the Dallas Mavericks; as confirmed by head coach of the organization, Jason Kidd.

The coach of Luka Doncic and his teammates confirmed that Vogel has become an advisor to the coaching staff; That is, he is not on the payroll as such but brings his experience and knowledge. «He is part of our technical staff. We had to beg a lot,” he says jokingly, “but they convinced him and I’m happy he said yes.”

The roles have changed. Between 2019 and 2021 Kidd was Vogel’s assistant, a position he left just when they called him from Dallas to become the head of the locker room. That’s right, they both won the Orlando bubble title alongside LeBron James.

Vogel’s firing by the Phoenix Suns was somewhat surprising, given that he had four years left on the five-year, $31 million contract he signed in 2023. Those in Arizona preferred to do without his services despite knowing that they should continue to pay their former coach. In addition to coaching the Suns and Lakers, Vogel also worked as head coach in Orlando and Indiana.
