Jiří Suchý celebrates his 93rd birthday. How does it relate to sports? | Video: Diary/ Radka Doležalová
Legendary musician, composer, lyricist, man of many other professions Jiří Suchý prav celebrates his 93rd birthday today. From the editorial office of Deník, we send congratulations and offer an article that reveals the artist’s relationship to sports. Suchý played a performance in Tábor and christened the book in Želč. It was in the Želeč picture gallery that Špejchar very willingly answered the questions of the sports editor. But at first he was somewhat taken aback: “Yeah. Are you from the sports editorial office? You probably won’t get anything out of me,” he glossed.

Really not?
This is an area that I completely do not understand.
At all?
No. one time when i was fifteen i was gambling pink ponk.
Gambling?
I wanted to be a chemist then and I had a Kipp apparatus. But when I lost everything, I bet the A and lost it. Since then, we completely resented the sport.
You didn’t even participate in sports debates in the theater?
I was an outsider. I couldn’t say anything about it. I didn’t know anything. I always asked a football fanatic like Jiří Štědroň, but just for fun, if he played Plánička. I didn’t know any other name.
Has the world of sports never appealed to you? Didn’t care?
I have great respect for sports. I know athletes do things I couldn’t do. Even if I cut myself. But it’s just not given to me.
But the stage is also somewhat reminiscent of a sports arena, the audience comes, you sweat…
Do you think?
You must be physically fit…
Yeah, I got to move, jump and dance. That’s to the point. But I never considered it a sport. If you think so, I will be from today.
Your actor colleague was Jiří Šlitr, and you never talked about sports with him either?
Jiří Šlitr skied competitively. He was even in the B team in the national team.
Did he pull on a non-athletic colleague with his sporting achievements?
Not at all. I just knocked it out of him once.
How did he appear on skis?
He was close to it from early childhood. He was from a village called Zálesní Lhota. He was born and lived there. He used to ski to school there. So he had skis under his skin since childhood and then started racing.
Have you never been into winter sports?
I was skating. When I was a little boy. When I was already a big boy, and I was about forty, an association of artists called Paleta vlasti held a ball on skates. I bought them. They weren’t like when I was little, they were on a loop and attached to shoes. That was even with the shoes. I went out on the ice in a tuxedo after thirty years. Surprisingly, I kept my skates on, and in no time I was at home. So I was actually a huge athlete. But only once. At that ball. Then life took me somewhere else.
