MALMÖ. Half the starting eleven out, a long-awaited corner goal in and a new move to the top of the table.

Now MFF can secure the gold in record time in the next round.

– We know we have a fantastic chance, says Isaac Kiese Thelin.

Malmö FF poured in goals from corners this spring.

But in June it suddenly stopped and in addition they sold cornerback Sebastian Nanasi and strong header Derek Cornelius this summer.

Until today’s match against Mjällby, MFF had actually not scored a single corner goal in eleven Allsvenskan matches.

Then it broke loose in the 20th minute when Sören Rieks headed in 1-0 after Pontus Jansson first headed Martin Olsson’s corner into the crossbar via Mjällby goalkeeper Noel Törnqvist’s fingertips.

Mjällby most dangerous at the beginning

Mjällby had three straight victories against MFF and in all three they had taken the lead by 1–0. They had the two best chances of the match so far to do it for the fourth time in a row before Rieks found the right one: Viktor Gustafson and Jacob Bergström respectively on passes from the right.

MFF was above all lucky with Bergström’s finish, which hit the support leg of Pontus Jansson almost at the goal line with Johan Dahlin overplayed.

Henrik Rydström changed/rotated half the starting eleven from the loss against Rangers last Thursday and let Isaac Kiese Thelin and Erik Botheim start together for the first time in a few games.

Kiese Thelin increased the lead to 2-0 after 31 minutes when he carefully slotted the ball in with a high kick as Törnqvist came out a little late and collided with Elliot Stroud.

Rydström annoyed with the referee

The result stood out after the match without Mjällby ever giving up but laying on for a reduction, even though they were probably aware that MFF extremely rarely lose when they have taken the lead with 1-0 (almost two years ago).

For example, MFF was given two warnings at the end of the match for masking (Jansson and Dahlin), which Mjällby’s coach Anders Torstensson also pointed out after the match.

– I have not experienced that before, says Torstensson.

Henrik Rydström was not happy about the warnings and had a chat with referee Mohammed Al-Hakim afterwards.

– He said it was such a clear masking. Fine! But do it every damn time. Because what did Mjällby do when we met at Strandvallen? What was Sirius doing when they were here? And when we met AIK, says the MFF coach.

Kiese Thelin’s dick to the TV studio

After the match, Kiese Thelin sent a pass to the Max studio.

– Let’s see what you come up with in the studio today. Last time you said I hadn’t scored in the last five games but then I had scored two games before. You better look up the facts, said the shooting king on TV from inside.

The victory means that MFF moves to the top again and now has ten points to Djurgården in second place.

It also means that MFF can actually secure the gold already in the next round, when they meet Värnamo at home, if the results go the Skåne’s way. In that case, it would be record time since the Allsvenskan was expanded to 16 teams in 2008.

– Of course we know we have a fantastic chance. But now we have to keep our feet on the ground and take it match by match, says Kiese Thelin.

If you don’t get all the results on Sunday, you can, via victory against Värnamo, secure the gold in the next round away to Västerås. Then of course the MFFs prefer to win the gold at home in their own stadium.

– It would be great fun to decide at home – and so early, says Rieks.
