The 2024 National Council election has been decided, and the result could not be more alarming: a right-wing party has won the election and will now set the tone. This election victory is a serious setback for all those who fight with courageous ideas for social justice, workers’ rights and urgently needed climate protection.
++Austerity package and reduction of rights threatened++
“Especially as a trade unionist, I am deeply concerned about what lies ahead for us,” says Marion Polaschek, chairwoman of the Independent Trade Union Group in the ÖGB, and she goes on to say: “Let’s not be mistaken! Even if stability and growth were promised, it is most likely a merciless austerity program at the expense of social security. We’ve seen it all before: a policy that makes the rich richer and drives everyone who has to live from their work further into dependency. I don’t even dare to think about the upcoming women’s policy.”
++No plan for climate protection++
The election victory is particularly devastating for climate protection. Marion Polaschek says: “Instead of taking courageous steps against the climate crisis, which has already arrived in our midst and will remain so, I fear a policy that continues to rely on outdated technologies, fossil energies, the isolation of international cooperation and the mockery of experts :inside sets. Right-wing populists have no sustainable concepts, no constructive ideas or modern approaches to preserving our livelihoods in this world. What kind of future will this be for our children and grandchildren?”

“This election victory only looks like a serious setback if we allow it,” says Marion Polaschek energetically and finally calls on: “Get involved, stay solidarity, organize yourself and join initiatives and us trade unionists! In any case, we will continue to fight for solidarity and climate justice and for a humane, fair society that does not serve the interests of a few, but of all.”
