8:2 – Wings impressively defeated Red Lantern

Ice hockey Bundesliga team Steinbach Black Wings Linz can take a deep breath after their 8-2 victory over Asiago. The Linz team impressively gave up last place in the table.

“Linza, Linza, Linza,” it echoed through the hall after the second third of the game. The majority of the 2,500 spectators rose from their seats and applauded the Steinbach Black Wings, who had gotten rid of their frustration in the previous 20 minutes of play.

After a good start and the deserved lead by Gerd Kragl (4th), Linz threatened to fall into old patterns. Andreas Kristler failed with a great chance (11th), Matteo Gennaro scored with the advantage to make it 1-1 for the Italians. Goalkeeper Rasmus Tirronen prevented the visitors from taking the lead (17th).

Three goals within 51 seconds

In the second third the Wings could no longer be held. Within 51 seconds, the Linzers threw the burden of four defeats in a row and countless missed opportunities overboard. Niklas Bretschneider made it 2-1 after an ideal pass from Marcel Witting. Graham Knott and Brian Lebler added two more goals in the same minute of play. The rebellion of the Italian guests in the form of 4:2 (32nd) only seemed to spur Linz on even further. Kristler (35th) and Luka Maver (37th) dispelled any doubts before the second half-time siren. Henrik Neubauer, who had scored the only goal of the season until yesterday, made it 7-2 (49th) when he was outnumbered. Captain Lebler scored the final score of 8:2 for the Wings (51st) in front of his father Eddy, who won four championship titles with Klagenfurt and Villach between 1985 and 1992 and is currently visiting his son in Linz.
