Record floods in Dubai and drop of more than 26 degrees in 24 hours in Slovenia

If these are not signs of the climate crisis, then what are? Dubai experienced its worst flooding since 1949 on record, and Slovenia also experienced something extreme.

According to the Slovenian media, the temperature dropped by 26.2 degrees Celsius within 24 hours on Tuesday (16/04/2024)!

The weather was summer last Monday (15/04/2024) in Slovenia with the thermometer reading 24.7 degrees Celsius.

But on Tuesday (16/04/2024) the change in weather was not just abrupt but rapid with summer turning into winter with blizzards, traffic problems and a record daily temperature drop of over 26 degrees Celsius.

Chaos remains in Dubai

Record rainfall in the United Arab Emirates and the wider Gulf region has flooded major roads and caused unprecedented chaos at Dubai International Airport.

The water that fell on Dubai was 1.5 times more than it falls in a year. The heavy rainfall was “a historic weather phenomenon” that surpassed anything seen since records began in 1949, state news agency WAM said.

Schools across the United Arab Emirates, which were largely closed before the storm, remained closed on Wednesday and the government ordered staff to continue working from home.

At the airport, arrivals ground to a halt on Tuesday night as standing water lapped the taxiways as planes landed, while passengers struggled to get to the terminals through floodwaters covering surrounding roads.

At midday on Wednesday, EgyptAir suspended flights between Cairo and Dubai until the weather in the UAE improves.
