After the election: Van der Bellen will start talks with Kickl on Friday

FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl will start on Friday at 1 p.m., as the presidential office announced on Wednesday. Federal Chancellor and ÖVP leader Karl Nehammer and SPÖ leader Andreas Babler will follow on Monday. The dates for meetings with NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger and Green Party leader Werner Kogler have not yet been set.

The order of the meetings with Kickl, Nehammer and Babler corresponds to the strength of their parties in the future National Council. According to preliminary results, the FPÖ became the strongest party for the first time in Sunday’s election with 28.8 percent, followed by ÖVP with 26.3 percent and SPÖ with 21.1 percent in second and third place respectively.

Who will be given the task of forming a government?

Van der Bellen announced on Wednesday that he would hold talks with the leaders of all parties as a first step after the election. The Federal President did not comment on when and whether he would award a contract to form a government.
