The authorities in Corfu were aware of the abusive behavior prevailing in the family environment of the 49-year-old woman, who confessed to killing her 69-year-old husband, since 2021.
In particular, the Prosecutor’s Office had been informed twice, with the same number of reports from “Smile of the Child”, about incidents of neglect and psychological abuse of the couple’s 11-year-old daughter.
The “Smile of the Child” in its statement says that the family had been involved again with incidents of domestic violence and neglect of a minor. In particular:
Smile, on 19/07/2021, received a report which was sent to the Prosecutor’s Office for excessive alcohol consumption by the mother, for neglect and for psychological abuse of the minor.
On 11/05/2022 he sent an “urgent” report to the Prosecutor’s Office after an incident that occurred on 10/05/2022 where the local Police Department had been informed, as the mother had consumed alcohol and the minor was alone at home.
“Once again, “The Child’s Smile” informs that the Competent Authorities are responsible for investigating reports of abuse/neglect. For every incident of domestic violence, there should be immediate reflexes and every report should be evaluated by a specialized team, and not be the case of one person”, emphasizes the announcement of the non-profit organization, about the crime in Corfu.
As it became known, it was the 11-year-old girl who called the emergency number 112 on Saturday after finding her father dead in the bedroom of their home.
“My dad came home from work a while ago and he’s stabbed. He is unconscious,” were her words at the beginning. The man was stabbed below the collarbone and has passed out from uncontrollable bleeding.
From the first moment, the police’s suspicions fall on his 49-year-old wife. A little while later she will confess that she killed her husband.
In fact, after police investigations near the family’s house, both clothes of their 11-year-old daughter were found with blood, as well as the weapon of the crime, a household knife.
“Drank almost to the point of unconsciousness”
In the meantime, a friend of the 49-year-old spoke to MEGA and revealed that she was drinking and the victim was abusing her.
“They used to fight and he hit her very often. That is, he made her black. Her body was blackened, bruised. She drank heavily, I’m pretty sure she’s an alcoholic. In other words, he drank almost to the point of anesthesia.”
Despite their frequent fights, the couple lived in the same house, with their 11-year-old daughter being their innocent victim and ultimately an eyewitness to her father’s murder.
“She told me that she had blacked me out, when she came back and from what she told me, she could see that she was drunk and that, he beat her to a bad degree. She hadn’t told me why she was drinking, she was telling me that she missed her own people, her family from Russia and that she has a serious problem with her husband who beats her.”
“At work he was always a calm person, smiling. A fine man, quiet. Who will know now in everyone’s house what is happening…tragic”, said a colleague of the victim.
The 49-year-old is being held and is expected to apologize to the investigator.
