In Argentina, the remains of Diego Maradona will be transferred to a future “mausoleum” in the center of Buenos Aires – Libération

Decided on Tuesday evening, October 1 by a court, the movement of the remains of “El Pibe de Oro” should make it possible to facilitate future tributes “to the greatest idol of Argentina”.

The «Memorial M10». This is the name of the future mausoleum in which the remains of Diego Maradona should soon rest. The Argentine justice system in fact gave its agreement on Tuesday evening, October 1, for the transfer of the body of the Argentine legend, who died in 2020, to a future mausoleum desired by his children, located in a central district of Buenos Aires.

Soon the big trial

According to the decision handed down by the court of San Isidro (north of Buenos Aires), there is no longer “opposition from any party” and one “favorable response must be given” for the sake of children. The idea, launched a year after Maradona’s death and formalized in 2023, is to move the remains of the Argentine football icon, which are in a private cemetery in Bella Vista on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, to the central district and ancient port of Puerto Madero.

This relocation towards the future mausoleum «Memorial M10»is designed so that “the Argentine people and the citizens of the world can pay tribute to the one who was Argentina’s greatest idol»according to the children’s initial request. They planned a finalized memorial in 2025, without further details.

The court decision came on the eve of a first, marginal trial of a nurse member of Maradona’s medical team, into the causes of his death. The caregiver, Gisela Madrid – who from the start said she had only followed the doctors’ instructions – had obtained the right to be judged separately.

The main trial of seven practitioners – a neurosurgeon and attending physician, a clinical doctor, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a head nurse, nurses – is scheduled, after several postponements, for March 2025. This trial, eagerly awaited in Argentina, involves on the circumstances of Maradona’s death, and potential negligence.
