The New York Mets and Atlanta Braves divided honors in a doubleheader and both advanced to the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason, whose regular round ended on Monday.
The doubleheader between teams from the Eastern Division of the National League was played at Truist Park, where the city dwellers defeated the brave team 8-7 in the duel that began the hostilities. The victory meant the passage of the Big Apple troop, led by Carlos Mendoza, to the playoffs.
In that match, metropolitan coach Francisco Álvarez hit a double – his 14th of the year – in four at-bats, scored one run and drove in another. His teammate Luisángel Acuña acted as a pinch runner and did not score.
For the Braves, shortstop Orlando Arcia went 0-for-2.
That regular phase final, held at the home of the bellicose, was won by Edwin Díaz (6-4) and lost by Pierce Johnson (6-6).
Atlanta reacted
Atlanta retaliated in the second match by blanking New York 3-0, to certify its passport to the October Festival. In that confrontation, Daysbel Hernández (3-0) emerged victorious, Joey Lucchesi (0-2) suffered the setback and Raisel Iglesias (34) took the save.
For Bravos, shortstop Arcia went 0-for-3 and finished the game with an offensive average of .218.
For the Mets, Luis Torrens finished 0-for-3 and had an offensive percentage of .229 in this “season.” Álvarez did not perform and finished the contest with an average of .237.
Acuña did play and defended both the short stops and the second sack. He finished 0-for-4 and left his average at .308 in this event.
Next rivals
Atlanta (89-73) emerged as the owner of the second wild card in the old circuit and will clash with the San Diego Padres at the start of the postseason, in which New York (89-63) took over the third wild card and obtained the right to challenge the Milwaukee Brewers at the start of the knockout series.
It is worth noting that Cascabeles de Arizona (89-73), which had an identical balance to Atlanta and New York, did not enter the most important stage of the 2024 championship, because it was not favored by the tiebreaker criteria.
The MLB playoffs, considered the best professional ball circuit on the planet, will start this Tuesday.
