National Assembly calls for a political dialogue to reform electoral laws

Caracas, Oct 1 (EFE).- The National Assembly of Venezuela, controlled by Chavismo, called this Tuesday to establish a political dialogue, starting next Thursday, to adjust electoral legislation, in view of the regional elections scheduled for 2025 and without having resolved the political crisis unleashed after the presidential elections on July 28.

The president of the AN, Jorge Rodríguez, explained in plenary that it is about “starting a political dialogue” with the formations and groups of voters that participated in the presidential elections to gather ideas and proposals that shape a new legal framework, which – announced – will govern the following electoral events.

“Our aspiration must be that never again will a thief, a turncoat, a stateless person, a violent person, a fascist be a candidate for absolutely any popular election position in Venezuela, ever again,” he stressed.

Rodríguez, who will chair the special commission of Parliament that will attend to this political dialogue, indicated that Among the laws to be reviewed are the one that governs the activity of parties and public demonstrations, that of electoral processes and that that defines the actions of the National Electoral Council (CNE).

“If you don’t want to come, it’s not necessary (…) but then don’t go screaming,” he stressed.

He announced that personnel from the CNE and the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) will be incorporated into this review process, two institutions questioned by the main opposition coalition – Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) – and by the international community. , for having proclaimed and validated, respectively, the re-election of Nicolás Maduro.

«The existence of people who use the electoral and political instruments provided by Venezuelan democracy to attack Venezuelan democracy, against people’s lives, against the property of the republic, against the sacred must end once and for all. territory of the republic,” added the leader of the Chamber.

The PUD has denounced fraud in the presidential elections and assures that its standard-bearer, Edmundo González Urrutia, won those elections, a claim supported by numerous countries that refuse to recognize Maduro’s victory until the CNE publishes the disaggregated results, as established by its own regulations, a step in the electoral schedule that, two months after the voting, has not been fulfilled.
