North Korea’s UN Ambassador Kim Song said Israel was immune from any punishment, despite having massacred more than 41,500 Palestinians, because of the support of the United States.
“It is almost inconceivable that a country (Israel) is immune to any criticism and sanctions even after committing a terrible massacre,” he said at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Monday (30/9).
Kim considers Israel’s impunity entirely thanks to the support of the US, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council. While expressing deep condolences to Palestine, Kim highlighted the US attitude of vetoing five UN Security Council resolutions regarding peace in the Middle East.
The US also overruled the international community’s desire to see ethnic cleansing stopped by its allies. “This is the US’s way of discrediting UN authority and inciting crimes against humanity,” he said.
Kim reminded member countries of the world body that the UN exists to prevent a recurrence of war disasters. However, he said, it is despicable and sad that acts against humanity such as the war in Gaza have been going on for a year.”
Even though the UN Security Council has passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel continues to attack the Gaza Strip after the Palestinian group, Hamas, invaded Israel in October last year.
The Israeli onslaught has killed nearly 41,600 people – mostly women and children – and injured more than 96,200 others, according to local health authorities.
The Israeli attack displaced almost the entire population of the region amid a blockade, which continues and has led to shortages of food, clean water and medicine. Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza. (Ant/Z-2)
