The battle with the flames is on two fronts

With the first light of day, the aerial means carry out water drops, while the ground forces also remain strong, in order to stop the many active scattered outbreaks.

More specifically, a major resurgence is underway in Sofiana and Gelini, however the general picture is judged by the Fire Department to be relatively improved, despite the fact that shortly after 12 noon strong winds started blowing in the area. Shortly after 7:00 in the morning, in fact, the residents of Sofiana received a message from 112 to evacuate the area. In particular, residents are asked to move away to the Rethi area.

Shortly after 8:00 in the morning, vehicle traffic was restored on the Corinth – Patras highway, from the height of Lykoporia to Derveni, which had been closed since late Monday night, due to the fire that broke out last Sunday in the area of the Rosens, of Corinthia.

Now, all vehicles move normally in both traffic streams.

According to information, the firefighters are fighting with outbreaks west of the fire on the border with Achaia towards Derveni – Eurostina, without however the fire having passed into Achaia, as well as east towards Xanthohori and Loutro Korinthias.

406 firefighters with 16 forest commando teams and 123 vehicles, volunteers and volunteer Civil Protection teams, as well as water tankers and project machinery of the Peloponnese Region and the General Staff of National Defense, as well as forces of the Forestry Service and the Greek Police, are operating at the scene.

Eight aerial vehicles are assisting from the air, namely five helicopters and three aircraft.

Two firefighters were injured

Two firefighters were injured. One with slight breathing problems and the second was injured in the eye by a splash of water.

Two dead

Tragic are the details of the two men aged 35 and 40 who died when they were surrounded by fire near the village of Elliniko. One of the two was the father of three children, while the second would have his third child in a few months.

The two men tried to approach with their motorbikes from the village of Elliniko, the area that was their friend’s corral, in order to help. There, however, it seems that they were surrounded by fire, as a result of which they met a tragic death, as their bodies were found charred by OPKE police yesterday early today, outside the village of Ano Pitsa near Elliniko.

The preliminary investigation is carried out by the Fire Department. The process for their identification has not been completed and is ongoing.

The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, visited Rosena Corinthia and the field of the fire yesterday. Mr. Kikilias held a coordination meeting at the “Olympus” Mobile Operations Center with the participation of representatives of the fire department, security forces, armed forces, local authorities and all the involved bodies.

Schools remain closed

All schools in the Municipality of Xilokastro-Eurostini, in Corinthia, will remain closed today.
According to the municipality, the decision to close schools for the second day in a row was made due to the extraordinary circumstances that have resulted from the fire.

Houses were burned, crops were destroyed

Regarding the damage caused by the fire so far, according to the mayor of Xylokastro-Eurostini, Vlasis Tsiotos, there is complete destruction to crops, while houses have also been burnt.

However, it is estimated that a clear picture of the extent of the damage will be available after the fire is extinguished, when the recording of the affected areas will begin.

Barrage of messages from 112

At the same time, successive messages via 112 have been sent to residents of settlements in the wider area in order to move away from settlements due to the ongoing fire. In particular, yesterday, through 112, messages were sent to the residents of the areas of Pyrgos, Chelydoreo, Zacholi, Lagadaiika, Spartinaika, Pellini and Ano Kallithea in Xylokastro to evacuate.
