SYRIZA and New Left bring to the Parliament the case of the death of the foreign prisoner in the AT Ag. Panteleimon

The case of the death of the Pakistani immigrant is brought to Parliament at AT Ag. Panteleimonas SYRIZA and New Left.

An initiative requesting an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the death of Pakistani immigrant A.T. Agios Panteleimons was submitted by 16 SYRIZA MPs.

As the official opposition says:

“At the initiative of the head of Citizen Protection Kostas Barkas and Immigration and Asylum Giorgos Psychogiou, sixteen (16) MPs of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance filed a petition requesting an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the death of a Pakistani immigrant, who was found dead at the Agios Panteleimon Police Station .

This sad incident raises serious concerns about the safety and treatment of immigrants in our country. The unfortunate man, who had been reported missing for almost a week, has multiple wounds on his body, while his family claims he was a victim of torture. He is already facing legal proceedings against the Prosecutor’s Office, asking for the causes of his death to be clarified.

Importantly, the initial police information, which characterized him as homeless and without identity, are in stark contrast to the evidence that has emerged. The particular immigrant, according to information, had a lease, an identity card, spoke Greek fluently and lived in Greece since 2004.

The first assessments of the police, which attribute his death to pathological causes, are strongly disputed by the published photographs and witness statements, which indicate a different reality.

In this context, the MPs request:

  1. Immediate and independent investigation into the circumstances of the immigrant’s death.
  2. Investigating the family’s claims and the evidence that disputes the police’s statements.
  3. Strengthen procedures for reporting incidents of ill-treatment by state agencies to protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of origin, stressing that the protection of safety and human dignity is the duty of the state and it is imperative to ensure that such tragedies do not happen again in the future” .

New Left: Current question from Dimitris Tzanakopoulos

From the New Left, MP Dimitris Tzanakopoulos submitted a topical question and calls on the Minister of Citizen Protection to answer “what measures he is going to take in order to investigate the responsibilities of the police authorities and so that we do not yet have a mock EDE”

“A current question to the Minister of Civil Protection regarding the death of Mohamed Kamran Asik at the Police Station of Agios Panteleimon was submitted by the Member of Parliament A Athens of the New Left Dimitris Tzanakopoulos. The Member of Parliament of the New Left calls the Minister of Citizen Protection to answer: What measures is he going to take in order that the responsibilities of the police authorities be investigated in this case and that we do not yet have a sham EDE and an inconclusive criminal investigation and perpetuation of impunity. If he intends to take measures so that the relevant regulations and provisions are actually implemented (articles 137A, 137B’, 127C’ and 137D’ of the Criminal Code and articles 239, 325 and 326 of the Civil Code) and to end the existence of a regime of idiosyncratic immunity for the perpetrators of such brutal behavior. for the elimination of police arbitrariness, as well as for the effective investigation, prosecution and punishment of related incidents as well as measures for the proper training of police officers in order to operate within the framework of the applicable laws and not in excess of their duty, at the expense of physical integrity of citizens”.
