AFTER entering the initial judging stage and 30 feature film titles having been screened, FFI 2024 is currently entering the next stage of the judging process which will involve film associations, and then the Citra Academy, before the short list of nominees is submitted to the final jury. FFI 2024 will hold a Nomination Night in October and an Awards Night on November 20 in Jakarta.

In organizing the 44th awards event, Ario Bayu, who currently serves as Chair of the 2024–2026 FFI Committee, expressed the spirit he wanted to convey, namely that the FFI awards celebration could have an impact on the cultural, artistic and economic landscape.

His party wants to collaborate with the entire film ecosystem. Apart from the dichotomy of films that are artistically strong and popular films, he also said that FFI also accommodates popular films by presenting the audience’s favorite categories which can be chosen based on public voting.

“FFI as a facilitator, we consider that there is administrative accountability. The challenge is the effort and enthusiasm to be able to assess as ideally as possible, films based on meritocracy. “The films at FFI can reflect our current society,” said Chairman of the 2024–2026 FFI Committee, Ario Bayu, during a limited interview with the media at The Darmawangsa, South Jakarta, Thursday (26/9).

As a space to search for narratives about Indonesian films, Ario Bayu also considers the search to be very dynamic and never ending. To describe the horizon of Indonesian cinema, in judging, FFI also involved many parties.

“There is an association, then after there is a list of selected films, there is also an assessment process from the Citra Academy team – those who have won the Citra Cup – who already have merit, until finally they are selected again to be submitted to the final jury,” continued Ario.

In the process of perfecting it, Ario wants to maintain democratic space by upholding integrity through art. The jurors involved must not have personal interests. Ario and his committee team are trying to create mechanisms to maintain objectivity, including with the initial curatorial stage.

To continue to be able to involve the entire film ecosystem which is not only recognized for artistic achievements but also other achievements that have an economic impact, FFI 2024 also maintains the audience’s favorite category of choice to make room for popular films.

“When it comes to films, there is an impact on the cultural and economic landscape, which affects Indonesia’s GDP and employment opportunities. There is a dichotomy between the artistic and the popular as well. It must be acknowledged that popular films also make a high contribution to the economy. However, all films produced by filmmakers have these elements. “This is why FFI also has a favorite category which is chosen by voting by the audience, to balance the industry.”

“The object must have an impact on culture, art and the economy. That’s the function of film festivals. For example, the program created by the Chief Executive of FFI 2024, Prilly Latuconsina, with its strategy of generating enthusiasm at the grassroots, through FFI Goes to Campus. An idea that also had an impact on film literacy. “Then, for Anugerah Night, we also present innovation spaces which we continue to strategize to make it more interesting, what we want to show to the public,” explained Ario Bayu.
