In the coming days, the Brazilian government will ban around 600 online betting sites because they do not comply with the new rules approved by the National Congress. The announcement was made by the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddadwhich highlighted that these sites operate irregularly. The recommendation is clear: if you have money on these sites, withdraw your funds before the blocks occur.

Why will websites be blocked?

The decision to ban these platforms comes as part of a government effort to regulate the online betting sector in Brazil, which has grown uncontrollably. In addition to curbing irregular practices, such as money launderingthe government also wants to protect vulnerable users, such as beneficiaries of social programs.

In August 2024 alone, 5 million Bolsa Família beneficiaries spent R$3 billion in online bettingan alarming fact that led to the ban on the use of credit cards and Bolsa Família itself in betting.

What to do if you have money on a banned site?

If you are a bettor who has a balance on one of these sites that will be blocked, it is essential to act as soon as possible to avoid losing your money. Minister Fernando Haddad was clear in his guidance: request a refund of the balance immediately. In many cases, the money deposited is retained on the sites to be reused in new bets, but with the imminent ban, it may become inaccessible if you do not take preventative measures.

To do this, you must access the platform where you placed your bets, go to the withdrawal or withdrawal area and request the amount to be transferred to your bank account or other available payment method. Don’t wait until sites are taken down, as once blocked, access may be permanently interrupted.

Government adopts new measures

In addition to blocking websites, the government is implementing a series of measures to make the betting sector safer and more transparent. Among the actions are the monitoring of bets by CPF, the ban on the use of credit cards and the regulation of advertising, which the minister described as “completely out of control”. The objective is to prevent irregular or fraudulent companies from continuing to unfairly exploit players.

The Federal Police have already opened an investigation to investigate the involvement of international groups that use these platforms for illegal purposes. The government is also taking measures to protect compulsive gamblers and combat the impact of betting on people in vulnerable situations.

Another point raised by Minister Haddad is the need to regulate advertising of the betting sector, which, according to him, is out of control. Just as there are restrictions on the advertising of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes, the government plans to create specific rules for the betting sector, aiming to reduce excessive exposure and protect consumers. Google has already announced that it will require websites that want to advertise on the internet to be registered with the Treasury.

Blocking takes place from October 11th

A Anatel will be responsible for blocking access to websites that do not meet legal requirements. From October 11, 2024these platforms will be officially taken offline. The list of sites to be banned will be released soon, allowing players to know which platforms are affected.
