Passenger traffic at airports is up in July

Upward passenger traffic noted the regional airports during the month of July.

The passenger traffic of the 14 regional airports moved upwards in July, according to data announced by Fraport. As expected the big loser was Rhodes, as the fires reduced 206,610 acres to ashes, while Mykonos and Santorini continued to lose ground.

Regional airports welcomed around 6,180,649 passengers, marking an increase of 4.5% compared to last July, when passenger traffic had reached 5,913,062 passengers.

Passenger traffic rose 10% in seven months

It is also 16.1% higher than in 2019, confirming estimates that tourism is heading for a new record. The positive performance is mainly due to domestic passenger traffic which increased by 10.1% and less international visitors which increased by only 3.7% compared to last year.

On a seven-month basis, seven-month passenger traffic increased by 10.7% compared to last year as passengers reached 17,959,831 passengers compared to 2022’s 16,216,974.

In the first half of 2023, total passenger traffic appeared to have increased by 7.9% compared to the corresponding period in 2022, a percentage that fell to 4.5% in July, reflecting the negative impact of the fires.

Fewer passengers in Rhodes, Santorini and Mykonos

International passenger traffic to Rhodes decreased by 5.3% with domestic traffic remaining higher by 10.1% compared to July 2022. On an annual basis, it recorded a rate drop of 4.2% compared to July 2022. In June, passenger growth was 5.3% year-on-year, following the upward trend of the previous months. The fall in July is understandably attributed to the positive fires

Passenger traffic in Mykonos and Santorini also fell, mainly due to a decrease in international passengers.

In particular, the airport of Santorini received a total of 4% fewer passengers, while that of Mykonos received 0.8% fewer visitors than last year. Domestic visitors were up by 8.2% and by 7.5% respectively, while foreign visitors were down by 8.9% and by 3.1%.

On the contrary, according to in.gr, the airports of Kavala (22.3%), Mytilini (18.9%), Thessaloniki (13.6%), Aktion (11, 4%) and Skiathos (10.2%).
