50 years of career in the Indonesian film industry has made Slamet Rahardjo one of the figures who has gone through various changing times in the industry. Starting from filming with limited equipment, changes in artistic style to today where production work is more capable. Slamet, to this day, is still actively involved in various roles.
At FFI 2022, he can still compete with other actors to win the FFI Citra Cup for best male supporting actor through the films First, Second and Third Love. This year, Slamet is trusted to be the 2024 FFI Ambassador along with Dian Sastrowardoyo, Kamila Andini, Lutesha and Bryan Domani.
“50 years in film, (I) am not an FFI Ambassador but a film ambassador,” joked Slamet Rahardjo during a limited interview session with the media at The Darmawangsa, South Jakarta, Thursday (26/9).
For Slamet, films are a way to understand life. FFI 2024, which carries the theme Merandai Cakrawala Sinema Indonesia, is interpreted as a way to represent what happens in real life through film.

“Merandai, the term is let us understand life, sing it, function and film life. “What is in the film is a representation of real life,” continued Slamet.
He said not to compare films produced in the past and now. There are differences, both in approach and artistic changes.
“Now, there are several potential young people who can convey messages from their villages, from society and their lives, into something interesting. In my time, it was more dramatized, stamboel. “Because the convention refers to theater, the history of film in Indonesia also started with theater people,” said Slamet.

Meanwhile, currently, according to him, there is an artistic exploration that no longer simply refers to theatrical conventions, which involves presenting the performance directly in front of the audience.
“Nowadays, it’s different. different cameras. “The camera is not just a substitute for the audience’s eyes, the camera is the problem itself,” he continued.
“Don’t compare it to the time when I made films where I didn’t have a monitor, celluloid still had to be imported from abroad, sets couldn’t be changed. Now, with such extraordinary facilities, I challenge the new generation of filmmakers to make good work. Do not be lazy.”
For Slamet, films should be vitamins, not poison. He said that this year’s FFI celebration was also a thinking space for imagination.
“The festival is actually a parade of crowds, and created by intelligent people. “This means that the search for narratives that reflect Indonesian life or films is never finished,” said Slamet. (M-4)
