Afghan Taliban blame Pakistan after ISIS ‘capture of key fighters’

Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said his special forces have arrested key members of the insurgent group (ISIS) that claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in Kabul last month. Six people were killed.

He said the alleged suicide bomber had “entered Afghanistan” after receiving training from a training camp in Pakistan, while others arrested in multiple raids had also “returned from Pakistan” recently.

Zabihullah Mujahid said his crackdown had driven the Daesh group out of Afghanistan, but had “established new operational bases and training camps” in Pakistan.

“From these new bases, they continue to plan attacks inside Afghanistan and in other countries,” he alleged.

The Taliban’s comments are expected to worsen relations between Kabul and Islamabad, which have been strained since the return of the Afghan Taliban.

Pakistan blames increasing attacks on its territory on Afghanistan and claims that the Taliban government has failed to eradicate the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants based there.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Zabih Mujahid’s statement.

Pakistan, China, Iran and Russia issued a statement last week on the sidelines of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, expressing “deep concern over the terrorism and security situation in Afghanistan.”

The quadrilateral group mentioned several militant groups, including Daesh and TTP, which are based in Afghanistan and pose a serious threat to regional and global security.

ISIS Khorasan was founded in 2015 and came to prominence in August 2021 with a bombing during the US withdrawal from Kabul airport, which killed around 170 Afghan and 13 US soldiers.

Analysts say the group is responsible for more international attacks, including the death of more than 140 people at a Moscow concert hall and two bombings in Iran.
