Israel moves troops to the northern border. And a ‘limited’ ground incursion into neighboring Lebanon is a possibility. This was announced by an Administration official and a US official quoted by CNN, both with the clarification that it does not appear that Israel has decided whether or not to proceed with the operation. The assessment, a source specifies, is based on the mobilization of Israeli troops and the reclamation of areas, moves that could be preparations for a land incursion after the killing of the leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hasan Nasrallah.

Israel decapitates Hezbollah, what happens now. And Iran takes the field

Two American officials spoke to ABC about small-scale operations or “border movements” that may have begun or are about to begin against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. And they confirmed that Israel does not appear to have decided whether to launch a ground operation, but is prepared for the possibility of an incursion that would still be limited in scope. The objective remains to keep the promise made to the Israelis, to allow the return to their homes of thousands of people forced to abandon the areas of northern Israel due to hostilities with the Lebanese Hezbollah which broke out again on 8 October last year after the start of Israeli operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in response to the previous day’s attack in Israel.

Even the Jerusalem Post, citing several authoritative sources, reports that despite the rumors circulating, Israel has not yet decided to invade Lebanon as part of the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah. “If the IDF decides to invade, the initial plan would be only a limited invasion in southern Lebanon,” it reads. Furthermore, “the situation is very dynamic and could change at any moment, especially if Hezbollah managed to strike Israel’s internal front.” In that case, Israel “may have to advance its invasion program by entering deeper into Lebanon to reduce rocket fire more quickly.” According to the newspaper, however, the Tel Aviv government «has not yet made a final decision on the ground offensive» and would prefer to wait to see «if the new leader of Hezbollah, still unannounced, will adopt a more pragmatic approach to put an end to the current conflict.”
