New Gleinalm toll booth on the A9 opens

The scaffolding with the temporary toll booths will also be dismantled and then used for the next upcoming construction project, the new construction of the toll booth at Bosruck between Styria and Upper Austria, it was said at a press conference on Monday.

New technology, better service

With the renewal of the technology, there is now an even better service during transit, as well as a low-energy design of the new building, said Asfinag board member Herbert Kasser on Monday at the presentation of the property and the new toll booths. For managing director Claudia Eder, buildings and toll booths from 1978 no longer met the requirements. There are now heat- and sound-insulated cabins and modern workplaces where other administrative activities can also be carried out when vehicle frequency decreases. This would allow jobs to be kept regionally.

In 2022, around 7.55 million vehicles passed the toll booth near St. Michael north of the Gleinalm tunnel, where a special toll is due – 5.4 million vehicles passed through the Bosruck. The construction of both toll booths will cost a total of around 55 million euros.

Energy self-sufficient building

Managing director Andreas Fromm pointed out, among other things, the widened lanes, from 3.20 to 3.50 meters. The new construction and renovation was carried out while traffic was running and new approaches to sustainability were introduced, including wooden construction and a collector corridor under toll booths. “The steel structure will now be dismantled and reused at the construction site to be set up at the Bosruck toll station,” said Fromm. The administration building is energy self-sufficient; 336 photovoltaic elements were installed on the roof. These will produce 160 (Gleinalm) and 110 (Bosruck) kilowatt peak respectively. The Gleinalm toll station received an air heat pump instead of the old oil heating system, and the energy source for the one to be built at Bosruck will be biomass. Furthermore, e-charging stations will be set up for the fleet.

Construction began in February 2023. The old steel framework will now serve as a temporary structure at Bosruck from February 2025 and will be completed there in the summer of 2026. The “temporary solution” could then also be used when converting other toll plazas.

Up to 40,400 vehicles per day

The previous highest number of passes per day was measured in August at the MotoGP in Spielberg – 40,400 vehicles. The peak value on a green lane (the one for an annual toll card, note) was 1,261 vehicles per hour, on Maundy Thursday 2022. Up to 100 vehicles per hour can be processed in a conventional toll box occupied by one person. The speed of dispatch also depends on how experienced, prepared or informed the drivers are.

The toll booths will be occupied from Tuesday. The temporary toll plaza will operate twice until October 9th. From October 10th this will be removed, then the Gleinalm will finally be free to travel in its modern state.
