The road to the supply of Kastoria opens – The filling of the LNG Gasification Station has been completed

Specifically, the filling of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Storage and Gasification Station developed by Enaon EDA, the Hellenic Gas Distribution Company, a subsidiary of Italgas, was successfully completed today in the Kastoria Industrial Park, with the aim of bringing natural gas to the regions of Kastoria and Argos Orestikos.

These areas, as noted in the relevant announcement, will be the first in Greece that Enaon EDA will supply with virtual interconnection through the LNG station, while Florina and the Industrial Area of Patras will follow until the end of 2024 .

In Kastoria, the transport of Liquefied Natural Gas was carried out by DEPA Emporias, through a specially constructed tank (LNG truck) which has an insulated tank in order to keep the natural gas in a liquid state.

The cooperation between the two companies provides for the supply and transport of LNG from the Revythoussa liquefied natural gas station with the aim of meeting the supply needs of Western Macedonia (Florina, Kastoria, Argos Orestikos) and Western Greece (Patra).

This supply is a milestone in DEPA Emporia’s strategy for natural gas to reach more remote areas of the country that are not connected to the national transmission network.

From the Storage and Gasification Station, the Liquefied Natural Gas will be re-gasified to be piped into the network under construction in the areas of Kastoria, Maniakoi, Argos Orestiko and Dispelio.

The partial activation of the Medium and Low Pressure networks for the supply of the Argos Orestiko and Dispelio areas is planned for the beginning of October and upon completion of these areas will follow the activation of the Medium and Low Pressure networks for the supply of the Maniakoi area. The network in the city of Kastoria is estimated to be activated within October.

The project

The project in the areas of Kastoria and Argos Orestikos envisages investments of 11.76 million euros for the construction of 117 km of network through which at least 2,100 consumers from the residential, commercial and industrial sectors will be supplied in the two years 2025-2026. Already, there is an increased interest in connecting to the natural gas network both from households and businesses as well as from public and municipal buildings, among which is the General Hospital of Kastoria, as well as the building of the Regional Unity of Kastoria.

To date, approximately 50 km of network have been constructed, and the project is expected to be completed in June 2025.

Ms. Francesca Zanninotti, Managing Director of Enaon EDA, the Hellenic Gas Distribution Company, emphasized: “We are very satisfied with the successful completion of the filling process of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Storage and Gasification station developed by Enaon EDA with the aim of supplying Kastoria and Argos Orestikos, which marks an important step towards ensuring the efficient and uninterrupted distribution of natural gas to our consumers. We are proceeding immediately with filling the network with natural gas, consistently continuing our processes with safety, efficiency and environmental sensitivity in mind. The project is progressing rapidly and very soon these areas will be the first in Greece to be supplied by Enaon EDA through state-of-the-art LNG infrastructures developed with the expertise of the parent group Italgas. We thank everyone who worked to successfully complete this critical milestone and remain committed to the continued evolution of our infrastructure to meet the needs of society and our consumers.”

The CEO of the DEPA Emporias group, Mr. Konstantinos Xifaras, said in this regard: “The LNG supply carried out in Kastoria is DEPA’s first in a series of supplies to the remote distribution network in Greece that will follow. Faithful to its strategic development plan and social mission, DEPA Emporias transfers the economic and environmental benefits of natural gas to households and businesses throughout the country, economically and safely. At the same time, our company is strengthening its position in the LNG transportation market, constantly increasing its fleet of vehicles to meet the needs of even the most critical regions of our country.”
