From rejecting PSV to oblivion; Stijn Spierings now plays in Denmark

It quickly became clear that Spierings’ Champions League dream was falling apart. To the surprise of many, the club from the north of France decided not to register him for the million-dollar ball. The Lens-Spierings combination turned out to be so bad that he returned to Toulouse that same summer, albeit on a rental basis.

Brøndby IF offers a solution

He got a lot more minutes in Toulouse, but he would not be as undisputed as he had been at that club. When Spierings returned to Lens this summer, he was once again able to leave on a free transfer. Now it was Brøndby IF that made the controller from AZ’s youth academy an offer.

After some inconsistent years, the Danish club is once again competing for the Danish prizes, but missed the championship by one point last season. That meant the Conference League preliminary round, in which Sean Klaiber and co. were eliminated by Legia Warsaw. Nevertheless, Spierings was convinced and he signed for three years.

Special career progression

This creates a special player passport. A passport of a midfielder who worked his way up to the Champions League via the Bulgarian Parva Liga and the French Ligue 2, but was subsequently not registered. Now the Danish Superligaen must re-energize his career, but he is still on the bench for the time being.

History shows that Spierings will not be so easily confused by this. When Sparta let him leave for free in the winter of 2019 after some raids in the KKD, everything that would come after that seemed like a bonus. RKC took a gamble with Spierings. He is now five years, four clubs, three countries and two prizes further.
