Europe Without a Palestinian State, Israel is Always Threatened

European Council Chairman Charles Michel warned that Israel cannot achieve security without lasting peace.

“I convey this to the Israeli government, trying to achieve security without peace is impossible,” said Michel in his speech at the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, reported by Anadolu, Friday (27/9).

According to him, without peace, there will be no lasting security. A world driven by revenge is a less safe world. The Palestinian people have the right to their own state. The security of Israel and all Jews will continue to be compromised unless a Palestinian state is established.

“This will result in polarization and weaken the international system which cannot be built on double standards,” he explained.

Regarding the conflict in Gaza, which Israel has been pounding since October 2023, killing more than 41,000 Palestinians, Michel said that his party wants an immediate ceasefire, in line with the view of the International Court of Justice.

“The life of every civilian is precious. We condemn all indiscriminate attacks targeting civilians. The European Union is acting and wants to step up efforts to achieve lasting peace within the framework of a two-state solution. The endless escalation must stop,” he said.

He said Europe wants an Israeli state that is democratic, strong, living in peace and security, side by side with the Palestinian people. “The Palestinian people must have a stable and viable state. They also have the right to respect and dignity,” he said.

He also called Israel’s attack on Lebanon an irresponsible act. Israel began major air strikes in Lebanon earlier this week, and is reportedly preparing for a possible ground attack.

Nearly a year of cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, sparked by the war in Gaza, has displaced thousands of people on both sides of the border. (I-2)
