Punta del Este (Uruguay), Sep 28 (EFE).- With the focus on “empowering” people, improving their lives and achieving a more accessible world, Latin America is committed to Artificial Intelligence (AI) for its economic and social, through inclusive technology applications.
This is what Brazilian expert Ricardo Wagner, responsible for the usability strategy, especially with generative AI, of Microsoft 365 for America, expresses during an interview with the EFE Agency within the framework of his participation in the innovation and entrepreneurship event Gramado Summit. , in the city of Punta del Este.
«The positioning in Latin America is quite open today. There are countries experimenting and applying technologies in different ways and the good thing is that, in each nation, these services can be accessed through the Internet,” he highlights.
Latin America empowered
He adds that this type of AI can be applied in matters related to health, commerce, the financial sector or in the public, through inclusive design and accessibility to make people’s lives easier and even “empower people with disabilities.” ».
“For example, today a person with low vision or blindness can use their mobile phone to obtain knowledge about what surrounds them, about people, they can read letters,” says Wagner in that sense.
Likewise, he points out that great cases are being seen in Latin America and around the world of how people are being helped to change, while highlighting the different cognitive services that can be applied to problems of vision or hearing as well as speech and touch.
«Imagine that you go to a store and want to buy something that you don’t know how to use, like makeup. With AI, you can not only scan the QR code to get product information, you can also have an immersive experience connected with AI cognitive services to teach you how to do your own makeup,” he says.
He also highlights the importance of now experimenting with this type of technology in Latin America, since before the first applications were made in the most developed countries, a change that he attributes to a “democratization of artificial intelligence.”
“The possibility for countries in the region to identify economic and social development through AI is real,” he says.
Enhance medicine
Sight for a blind person, the prevention of an epilepsy attack or the detection of cancer are some of the technological possibilities that AI transfers to medicine to improve the quality of life of patients and achieve a more accessible world.
«Today, cancer can be prevented through vision detection. Through a scanner, ocular signs can be identified as to whether a tumor may be in a place in the body,” explains the Brazilian.
Likewise, the Mirror HR-Kit project (Epilepsy Research Kit for Children) stands out in which he participated with other Microsoft employees in 2019 and which won the company’s annual global Hackathon, in which more than 17,000 projects participated.
«We created an AI application to help parents of people with disabilities related to epilepsy. The objective was to identify signs in the environment that could be related to a seizure,” explains the accessibility expert.
Already used by more than 153 families in 23 countries, this app connects to an Apple Watch device and sends alerts when abnormal activity could indicate a seizure, reducing the chances of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.
Copilot of the human being
Beyond health, AI can also contribute to the economic development of a region, as Wagner explains is happening in Latin America, where many companies are already applying it.
“We have the case of the large Brazilian agribusiness, where many farmers are applying technology to identify the best seeds,” explains who points out that this system also avoids high production costs and makes them more competitive in the world market.
For Wagner, this is just one example of how AI is a tool at the service of humans, since, he says, “human beings will be in control and will be the pilots, while AI will be the co-pilot.”
“I believe that Artificial Intelligence will increase human capacity,” he concludes.
