Russia.. Approval of a new version of the Amur tiger conservation strategy

This was reported by the press service of the “Amur Tiger” Center.

She said: “The first strategy for preserving the Amur tiger in Russia was approved in 1996. The second edition of the strategy appeared in 2010, and its goal at that time was to determine the mechanisms for preserving a group of Amur tigers to number at least 500 individuals with the maximum possible genetic diversity in Russia.” .

A statement published by the press service of the “Amur Tiger” Center said: “The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia, Alexander Kozlov, approved a new version of the strategy for the conservation of the Amur tiger in Russia until 2034. The new version of the strategy responds to the modern challenges and threats faced by this rare wild animal.” .

The purpose of the new version of the strategy is to define mechanisms for the long-term conservation of a group of Amur tigers that number no less than 700 individuals and ensure their protection from extinction in Russian forests.

One of the strategy’s tasks is to identify mechanisms for preserving tiger populations and their survival in conditions of confronting the increasing human impact on nature. Other tasks include identifying mechanisms that would prevent epidemics among tiger populations and their food supplies, and maintaining a stable number of tigers in the territories of Russia, China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The new edition of the strategy also stipulates measures to be taken to respond to new threats.

The press service quoted the Director General of the Amur Tiger Center, Sergey Aramilev, as saying: “When resolving conflict situations, not only humans but also tigers should be safe.” It is necessary to ensure the humane capture of wild animals and their safe movement to other areas.

Another clear threat is the negative human impact associated with commercial companies’ mining and linear infrastructure projects in the tiger’s range.

It is noteworthy that about 95% of Amur tigers live in Russia, and the Amur tiger is one of the rarest wild animals on the planet, and it is listed in the International Red Book. These big cats live in four Russian provinces: the Primorsky and Khabarovsk regions, the Amur region and the Jewish Autonomous Region. According to expert estimates, the number of tigers in Russia is currently about 750 individuals.
