VHS lectures in the new semester

Michel Abdollahi talks about his experiences in Canada in the VHS Oldenburg. Climate change is one of the main topics in the new half of the year, but it is also about US elections, the Basic Law and AI from Rastede.

Oldenburg – The VHS Oldenburg started a new semester in September with the annual focus “NO_AUSREDEN_MORE”. The topic of climate change plays a central role in the lectures. On Tuesday, November 19th, the VHS welcomes the journalist Michel Abdollahi as a guest in the lecture series “VHS | Compass”. Abdollahi talks about his documentary series “Time to say goodbye,” for which he traveled to northern Canada. Using excerpts from the documentation, he illustrates how the polar bear hunting permitted there motivates more commitment to species protection.

Oldenburg scientist

Prof. Helmut Hillebrand, Professor of Plankton Ecology at the University of Oldenburg and Director of the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB), will speak on November 14th about his research on the effects of climate change on marine biodiversity.

Other events deal, among other things, with the use of heat pumps for private energy supply and give tips for sensitive use of water in the home garden.

International politics

Other lectures deal with various political topics. Including Prof. Götz Frank, who spoke on January 21, 2025 about the long path to liberal democracy in Germany on the occasion of the 75th birthday of the Basic Law.

But the VHS also looks at international politics. On Tuesday, November 12th, political scientist Siebo MH Janssen will classify the significance of the results of the US presidential elections in terms of domestic and foreign policy. Discussions about Europe on November 7th will focus on Germany’s importance as a weapons exporting nation. The guest is Dr. Christian Schliemann-Radbruch, co-head of the Business and Human Rights program area at the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, was invited.

AI from Rastede

On December 4th, technical, economic and ethical aspects of artificial intelligence will be the subject of a conversation with Matthias Brucke, founder of embeteco from Rastede.
