In conjunction with the Drug Authority’s directive, a message to citizens regarding the use of “similar” medicines, questions have arisen about how these medicines know the original types, at a time when some patients have been struggling to obtain their prescribed medicines for weeks.
Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, directed the Minister of Health, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, in coordination with the Doctors and Pharmacists Syndicates, to write the “medical prescription” using the scientific name of the medicines instead of the trade names.
The authority said in an awareness circular that the generic drug provides the same active ingredient and pharmaceutical form as the original drug, adding: “You must know that the drug you are looking for and cannot find on the market is not considered an incomplete drug, because this drug has multiple analogues on the market that provide the same active ingredient and If the trade name differs, please feel free to use available examples.
The Egyptian Medicines Authority launched a service to search for analogues and alternatives to important medications that are frequently complained about, as it is possible to find out the analogues and alternatives available for some medications via the link.. (Click here)
The scientific names of medicines are the names that are used to refer to the active ingredients in the medicine, and they differ from the trade names that pharmaceutical companies choose to market their products.
