THE MINISTRY of Agriculture (Kementan) through the Directorate General of Plantations held a Commodity Outlook Seminar with the theme “Strategy for Sustainability and Competitiveness of Plantation Commodities in Global Challenges in 2025 to encourage sustainable economic growth in the plantation sector.
The event which took place at the Grand Sovereign Hotel, Tuban, Bali, on Friday (27/9) was attended by various plantation sector stakeholders, discussing strategic steps in facing global challenges in the coming year.
Plt. Director General of Plantations Heru Tri Widarto in his speech underlined the importance of the plantation sector as a supporter of the country’s foreign exchange.
He highlighted the challenges that must be prepared for in the future, including mapping the European Union’s destination export markets and issuing a Cultivation Registration Certificate (STDB), which is a priority.
“After this seminar, it is important to identify the position of each commodity and determine which ones need to be prioritized, such as cocoa which needs to increase production due to climate change,” said Heru.
Heru also emphasized the need for effective management strategies, including for the Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDP) in developing commodities such as cocoa and coconut.

According to him, sustainability must be considered not only from the environmental aspect but also from the business aspect.
Special attention is also given to the social and cultural readiness of the community to focus on certain commodities to avoid unplanned land transfers.
Apart from that, Heru invited the younger generation, especially Gen Z, to enter the plantation sector.

He hopes that young people can play a role in managing and developing plantations from upstream to downstream, while promoting local commodities such as healthy palm oil and coconut oil.
“We must jointly map opportunities for farmer welfare and plantation sustainability, and ensure that the wheels of the national economy keep turning,” he added.
Head of the Bali Province Agriculture and Food Security Service, I Wayan Sunada, expressed his appreciation for the support of the Ministry of Agriculture which continues to encourage the plantation sector in Bali.

Global Markets and Commodity Challenges
One of the speakers at the seminar, Wahyu Jatmiko Krisdiyanto from PT LPP Agro Nusantara, highlighted the importance of analyzing price developments and commodity market dynamics.
He mentioned India and China as market opportunities for Indonesian plantation commodities, especially palm oil, while still paying attention to global market developments to design the right strategy.
RPN Senior Researcher Ratnawati Nurkhoiry said that plantations face various challenges, including risks that impact production and productivity.
According to him, fluctuations in the output value of commodities such as palm oil, rubber, coffee, sugar cane and tea must continue to be increased both in terms of production and productivity, through analysis of the internal and external environment of commodities.
One of the seminar participants, Siti Marfuah, said this event was very useful because it provided an overview of the contribution of the plantation sector to the Indonesian economy and how future challenges must be faced.
He emphasized the important role of the younger generation in continuing the development of plantation commodities, which is not only the responsibility of the government or farmers, but also of all parties.
Separately, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman revealed that commodity markets have a big influence on the global economy, from food to energy.
He emphasized that climate change, geopolitics and economic shifts will continue to bring new dynamics to commodity markets.
The year 2025 is expected to bring its own opportunities and challenges in the global commodity market.
“Sustainability and competitiveness of commodities must be a priority. With the right strategy, we can meet today’s needs while protecting resources for future generations. “We need joint steps towards a sustainable and competitive future,” concluded Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman.
