Pakistan nominated ‘Joyland’ for Oscars

Pakistan’s Oscars Selection Committee has selected the film ‘Joyland’ for Pakistan’s nomination in the ‘World Feature Film Award’ category of the 95th Academy Awards to be held in 2023.

The committee of the Oscars awards will nominate 15 films after watching the films sent from all countries on December 21 this year, while the final five nominations will be announced on January 24.

The Oscars Awards will be held on March 12 next year. Pakistan’s selection committee is chaired by two-time Oscar-winning director Sherman Obaid Chinoy.

Along with him in the committee there were famous actors, directors and writers from different walks of life including Ali Sethi, Umar Shahid Hamid, Rafi Mehmood, Samina Ahmed, Jerjis Seja, B Gul, Rizwan Baig, Mo Azmi and Zeba Bakhtiar are included.

Joyland is directed by Saeem Sadiq and produced by Sarmad Khost.

The main requirement for a film to be recommended for final nomination for the Oscars is that the film has been screened in a commercial cinema in its home country for at least one week between January 1 and November 30, 2022.

The decision of this committee is made by referendum.

Sherman Obaid Chinoy said that the film Joyland gives hope that Pakistani films will also make their mark on the screens of the world. ‘We are delighted to be sending our best film to compete at the Oscars. This may be the year we get noticed there.’

It should be remembered that Joyland has not yet been released in Pakistan, it is expected to be released on November 18.

Earlier, Joyland won the Jury Award at Cannes International Film Festival held in France.

It is the first film to win an award in this category at Cannes.

In September this year, the Central and Provincial Censor Boards of Pakistan issued certificates allowing its exhibition.

Talking to Independent Urdu about the nomination, the film’s director Saeem Sadiq said, “It has now become a responsibility because it is a great honor that this film has received.”

Interestingly, till now only two films from India, ‘Salam Bombay’ in 1989 and ‘Lagaan’ in 2001, have made it to the final nominations.
