Vienna (OTS) –

On the occasion of the International Day of the Older Generation on October 1st, Monika Kemperle, Federal Pensioners Chairwoman of the ÖGB, emphasizes the importance of older people in society. “Older people have had a decisive influence on our society through their decades of commitment. It is high time that their needs become more of a political focus,” demands Kemperle.

Demographic change represents one of the greatest societal challenges. “The older generation is becoming larger and more active at the same time. This requires comprehensive measures in many areas, from health care to the labor market to nursing,” emphasizes Kemperle.

The ÖGB makes it clear: There is no generational conflict and pensions are secure. “Increasing the retirement age to 67 is out of the question for us,” says Kemperle. Instead, the existing pension system must be strengthened. “The discussion about raising the retirement age creates uncertainty, even though the pension system is sustainably financed. We as ÖGB firmly reject this increase.”

New models for a good working environment

Especially in the area of work, new models must be created that enable healthy and dignified work until retirement. “It cannot be the case that older people have to leave working life early because of health problems or overwork. We need aging and age-appropriate jobs and a working world that meets the needs of older workers,” demands Kemperle.

Another key concern is digitalization. Many older people face major hurdles when it comes to digital transformation because the necessary skills and access are often lacking. “We must not allow part of our society to be excluded by digitalization. Analogue alternatives are indispensable in order to take older people along and enable participation for everyone,” demands the ÖGB Federal Pensioner Chairwoman.

Finally, Kemperle emphasizes: “Age discrimination must have no place in our society. Older people must receive the support and appreciation they deserve. A fair and future-oriented pension policy has nothing to do with a generational conflict, but is a question of social solidarity.”

The ÖGB will continue to advocate strongly for the concerns of the older generation and calls on the next federal government to take concrete measures to use demographic change as an opportunity and to enable a good life for all generations.
