New York Jews occupied the Statue of Liberty to demand a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

Wearing black T-shirts with slogans such as “Jews demand a cease-fire now” or “Not in our name,” the protesters unfurled placards reading “The whole world is watching” and “Palestinians should be free” at the New York symbol, which stands on Liberty Island at the entrance to New York Harbor. .

In the past month, New York, known as a migrant hub, has been rocked by pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

The city, home to some two million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Muslims, has so far avoided violence related to the protests, but tensions are palpable in certain areas, such as university campuses.

However, there are different opinions in both communities, both Jewish and Muslim.

The liberal part of American Jewish youth began to strongly criticize Israel, accusing it of genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

They also condemn US President Joe Biden’s military and diplomatic support for Israel, which has been bombing Palestinian territory for a month since an October 7 attack by Hamas that Israeli officials said killed 1,400 people.

The death toll in the Gaza Strip topped 10,000 on Monday, according to the enclave’s health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas militants.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Washington on Saturday, calling for an immediate ceasefire and condemning the US policy of supporting Israel.

In late October, thousands of protesters, most of them organized by the US Jewish activist group Jewish Voice for Peace, occupied Grand Central Station in Manhattan with the same demands.
