Remains of Ice Age mastodons discovered in Peru – Life & Style

Fossilized remains of three Ice Age mastodons have been found in the Andes mountains of Peru, raising the question of how these giant animals got here.

The discovery was made during excavations that began in 2019, when the remains were found in a valley near the town of Chambara. These mastodons are believed to be around 11,000 to 12,000 years old, and one of the remains is almost complete. .

Paleontologist Ivan Meza has said that if his skull is found, it could be the best-preserved mastodon in Peru.

Over time, the Andes mountain range rose and sea levels fell, drying out the area and creating lakes in the Mantaro Valley, which became a source of water for animals, the researcher said.

The search for ancient remains continues in Peru and this discovery is of scientific importance not only at the national but also at the international level. A team also recently discovered a 16-million-year-old river dolphin skull in the Peruvian Amazon.
