His election is a particularly important development, as Mr. Foundas, distinguished professor of Physics at the University of Ioannina and scientific representative of Greece at CERN, is the first Greek to take over the reins of CERN, the largest European research laboratory for nuclear and particle physics.
The electoral success is due to the targeted and strategically organized diplomatic mobilization, as well as to the scientific prestige of the Greek candidate.
Today, CERN is 70 years old, consists of 24 member states (Greece was a founding member), employs around 2,600 employees and offers services to over 600 research institutes and universities worldwide.
