The second day: Violent clashes in Khartoum between the army and the Rapid Support

Sudan – Violent clashes continued for the second day in a row yesterday in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

Eyewitnesses reported that violent explosions occurred in the central Khartoum area as a result of artillery shelling and army warplanes, while columns of smoke rose from the place.

Witnesses reported that the army bombed by aircraft rapid support sites near the city of Bahri, north of Khartoum, in conjunction with its intense overflights of the Sudanese capital.

The army also deployed, according to witnesses, in the Al-Kadro and Samarab areas, north of the city of Bahri, and took control of the main streets in the two areas that were under the control of the Rapid Support.

Witnesses also reported that communications and the Internet were cut off in large parts of the Sudanese capital.

For its part, local media outlets, including the “Sudan Tribune” website (exclusive), reported on Friday that the Sudanese army is trying to advance towards the Al-Muqrin area in the western part of central Khartoum, while the Rapid Support Forces are desperate to defend it, after they took control of two bridges on Friday. “The White Nile” and “Al-Faytahab” are on the Nile River and connect Khartoum to Omdurman.

As of 14:00 GMT, neither side of the fighting had issued any comment regarding these military operations.

This military development comes a day after the Sudanese army launched an “largest” attack on the Rapid Support positions it had controlled in Khartoum since the outbreak of fighting between the two sides in April 2023.

Of the three neighboring cities that make up the greater Khartoum region, namely Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri, the Sudanese army, before the start of Thursday’s attack, controlled most of the city of Omdurman, while the Rapid Support continued to control most of the areas in the cities of Khartoum and Bahri.

The fighting between the two sides since mid-April 2023 has resulted in more than 20,800 deaths and about 10 million displaced people and refugees, according to the United Nations.

UN and international calls are mounting to end the war in order to spare Sudan a humanitarian catastrophe that has begun to push millions into famine and death due to food shortages due to the fighting that has spread to 13 out of 18 states.
