The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaleft this Sunday for Mexico, where he will attend the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and will meet with both the new president of the North American country and the outgoing one, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, official sources reported.

Lula will arrive in Mexico City at the end of the afternoon and will begin his official agenda on Monday, when he will have a private meeting with the next president on the eve of the inauguration, to discuss various issues, among which, the Venezuelan crisis, according to Brazilian diplomatic sources anticipated.

Lula da Silva wants to analyze with Sheinbaum Pardo the possibility of continuing to attempt joint mediation by Brazil, Colombia and Mexico to promote a dialogue between the Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduroand the opposition after the elections last July.

Until now, the efforts made by Brazil together with Colombia and, to a lesser extent with Mexico, have been unsuccessful in achieving that objective.

None of the three countries has recognized the result announced by the electoral body and the Supreme Court of Venezuela, which attributed the victory to Maduro and was denounced as fraudulent by the opposition, which ran as a candidate for Edmundo González Urrutianow exiled in Spain.

On the same Monday, the Brazilian president will also have a private meeting with López Obrador.

On Tuesday, the Brazilian president’s agenda will be limited to the formal events of Sheinbaum’s investiture, after which he will return to Brasilia.

Representatives from more than 100 countries

So far they are 16 international leaders who have confirmed their participation in the event, most of them Latin Americans, as reported by Sheinbaum Pardo last week.

This list includes the presidents of Colombia, Gustavo Petro; of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; of Bolivia, Luis Arce; Chile, Gabriel Boric; Honduras, Xiomara Castro; Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader; Guatemala, Bernardo Arevaloy Paraguay, Santiago Pena.

The leaders of the Caribbean region will also attend Belice, Saint Lucia, Dominica y Haitiwhile from Africa the presidents of Ghana y Libya They have also announced their presence.

In addition, representatives from up to 105 countries and 22 international organizations will attend, among which the presence of the wife of the American president stands out, Jill Bidenwho will lead the delegation from the North American country.

Mexico – Spain conflict

Also causing controversy this week was Sheinbaum’s decision not to invite the King Philip VI of Spain because the monarch did not respond to a letter that López Obrador sent him in March 2019 to request that he recognize the abuses committed by the Spanish against the indigenous peoples of Mexico in the conquest, and which has caused the Spanish Government to announce that it will not send no representative in protest.
