The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) must continue to use its influence to help Palestine, which to date has not yet achieved independence. This is important to achieve recognition of sovereignty for the struggle of the Palestinian people.

“Recognition (sovereignty) fuels hope for the Palestinian people is a crucial step towards achieving a two-state solution and creates political pressure for Israel to stop its atrocities,” said Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi as stated in a written statement by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received in Jakarta, Friday (27/ 9).

Retno emphasized this at the Ministerial Level Meeting of the NAM Committee for Palestine which was held on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, Thursday (26/9) local time.

According to Retno, NAM countries should use their influence to support the struggle of the Palestinian people by inviting more and more countries that have not recognized the sovereignty of the State of Palestine to immediately recognize it.

NAM countries are also encouraged to continue fighting for the effective implementation of UN General Assembly resolution Number ES-10/24 which demands that Israel end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The NAM consists of 121 countries that are not formally aligned with any particular major power bloc, especially in the context of the former Cold War. Of all the NAM member countries, only Palestine has not achieved independence.

Apart from Indonesia, the NAM Committee for Palestine also has members from Algeria, Iran, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malaysia, Cuba, India, Venezuela, Egypt and Senegal. During the UN Security Council High Level Open Debate at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday (25/9), Retno also questioned the leadership of the UN Security Council (DK) in creating peace when conditions in Palestine continued to worsen.

With the worrying conditions in Palestine as 41,000 people have lost their lives and millions of others have been displaced, and access to aid has been cut off, Retno said, “We deserve to question the world’s sense of humanity.” (Ant/Z-2)
