Speaking to Independent Urdu, Saud Nasir said that he had opened a Kunafa shop in Box area a few years ago. People started liking this dish enough, after which they opened kanafa stores in other areas of the city. He went to Turkey and got training in making kunafah.

Saud explains that ‘most of the people in the box are from Arab countries, who like to eat more sweet things. Kunafa is traditionally a sweet eaten during Ramadan, but now it is available in shops at any time of the year.’

He said that the interest in Arabic food has increased in Hyderabad during the last few years. The demand for sweets has also peaked. People in some parts of the city who go to hotels order Arabic dishes like baklava and kunafa.’

Saud Nasir said that his paternal grandfather was among those who were brought to Hyderabad from Yemen. At home, his mother used to prepare kunafa and feed everyone, after which he got the idea to start a kunafa business.
