In Medellín, approximately 865 tons of food are thrown away daily, which is equivalent to 900,000 dishes, enough to guarantee breakfast, lunch and dinner for 70,000 families. This scenario impacts a world where 1 billion people suffer from hunger.

On International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day, the District and the organizations that are part of the Sustainable Food and Zero Waste Chapter of The Great Alliance for Food
Circular Economy, they call on all citizens: food is not thrown away.

“We invite you to adopt responsible behavior. It makes no sense to talk about food waste when we have a population that needs to improve its conditions. We want, with the alliance we signed with
different national and international understandings, raise our voices and say that food is not thrown away,” said the Secretary of the Environment, Ana Ligia Mora.

Food loss not only affects those without access to it, but also the natural environment. In the last 50 years, its production has caused 70% of the decline in biodiversity on land and 50% in freshwater.

Every time food is lost, its nutritional potential is impacted and resources are affected. To produce one banana, up to 160 liters of water may be needed, which is equivalent to leaving the shower running for 20 minutes.

In this way, this waste also becomes water waste and contributes to emissions that accelerate climate change.

The Mayor’s Office of Medellín, WWF Colombia, C40, The Consumer Goods Forum, Fundación Mi Sangre, FOLU Colombia, ASURBE, EatCloud and the Fenalco Solidario Corporation invite you to become aware and act. Reducing this loss in homes is a simple task, but with great impact. Planning purchases better, storing groceries properly and being creative in preparation are actions that make a difference.

With the hashtag #LaComidaNoSeBota, the Mayor’s Office of Medellín and the Sustainable Food and Zero Waste Chapter call for sharing actions and joining this alliance that contributes to the sustainability of
food systems and waste reduction.
