Mariana Rendón, head of mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Honduras, indicated that the migratory flow towards the United States raises the need to coordinate solutions between the countries of origin, transit and destination, to save lives and strengthen the channels regular migration.

The humanitarian spokesperson highlighted the importance of promoting economic development in countries of origin, so that people can find opportunities and are not forced to migrate.

Furthermore, the IOM head of mission stated that the migration situation in Honduras is “quite complex” because she considers that the country has become “a mandatory transit point for thousands of Latin American, African and Asian migrants trying to arrive.” to the USA.”

According to figures from the National Migration Institute (INM), around 292,017 migrants in transit to the United States have entered Honduras irregularly so far this year. Of this figure, 48.3% (141,035) are Venezuelans.

Rendón added that many people who transit through Honduras are welcomed in four Centers for Attention to Irregular Migrants (CAMI), enabled by the government, where they take biometric data and offer them medical services and food.

El Paraíso, the main route for migrants

The Honduran Migration Institute assures that the majority of migrants transit the municipalities of Danlí and Trojes, department of El Paraíso, bordering Nicaragua.

In recent years, Paradise has become the main route that migrants, mainly from Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti, use to enter Honduras and continue to the United States.

Many of the migrants who enter Honduras do so irregularly, through “blind spots” through human traffickers, known as “coyotes,” who do not always take them to the border with Guatemala.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on September 25 that his country will allocate 228 million dollars for food assistance to Venezuelan migrants traveling through Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

This amount is part of a new allocation of funds of 685 million dollars with which the United States seeks to help the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to welcome migrants who transit through their territories.

Blinken made this announcement during a meeting of foreign ministers of the Los Angeles Declaration, an initiative launched by the United States to address regional migratory flows, held in New York on the occasion of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

Of the total funds, $369 million will be allocated to help vulnerable refugees and migrants in the countries in the region that receive them. The US will also provide $10 million for a World Bank program that promotes economic development for refugees and their host communities.

This commitment between the United States and other countries is based on cooperation to stop irregular migration and expand legal avenues so that foreigners can make their lives in Latin American or Caribbean countries.
