Early life

Maggie Smith was born Margaret Natalie Smith on December 28, 1934, in Ilford, England, outside London. His parents were Margaret and Nathaniel Smith.

When Maggie was 4 years old, the family moved to Oxford, where her father worked as a pathologist at Oxford University. Maggie studied at the all-girls Oxford High School until, aged 16, she left school and attended the Oxford Playhouse School from 1951 to 1953. She made her professional stage debut in 1952, playing Viola in Oxford University’s production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night Dramatics Society. He first gained recognition in the 1956 Broadway revue New Faces and played the lead comedian in the London revue Share My Lettuce (1957–58).

Early Career in Theater and Film

After a brief stop on Broadway, New York, where he appeared in the 1956 comedy New Faces, Smith also began acting in films.

Her first role was a brief uncredited appearance in Child in the House (1956) followed by a larger role in the crime drama Nowhere to Go (1959).

In the 1960s, Smith was active with the National Theater of Great Britain. She played Desdemona in Laurence Olivier’s Othello in 1964.
