YB also loses against GC

It continues to resin | September 29, 2024

Masters YB are still waiting for their first home win. The Bernese lose 0-1 against the Grasshoppers. The performance shown doesn’t exactly inspire a lot of self-confidence in view of the Champions League game against Barcelona on Tuesday.

The Young Boys are still struggling. Last week the spell finally seemed to be broken with the 4-1 win against Winterthur, the first championship win in the seventh round. Now the Bernese fell into old waters again and showed a dispassionate performance in the first half. This was despite the Grasshoppers taking the lead early on.

In the 4th minute, a shot from Giotto Morandi was deflected so that it landed in a high arc and into the net. Even GC coach Marco Schällibaum didn’t seem to have realized at first that the ball was actually in the goal. It was the third league goal for the 25-year-old Morandi. He had already taken a 1-0 lead against Lugano and Yverdon, but his team lost 2-1 both times. This time GC saved the three points over time.

The Bernese, who had been harmless for a long time, put more pressure on in the second half, but repeatedly failed due to GC goalie Justin Hammel or themselves. This meant that YB missed out on getting a good feeling before the Champions League game against Barcelona on Tuesday. In addition, captain Loris Benito, who had just returned from injury, had to be replaced with an injury. Coach Patrick Frame’s team remains on six points and has so far only left Winterthur behind in the table.

GC, on the other hand, confirmed the recently noticeable upward trend with its first victory in Bern since April 2017. Including the cup win against Thun, the Zurich team have won three of the last five games and also played a draw against Servette.
