We recently reported that Muriel Furrer’s family is against interrupting the Road Cycling World Championships – Zurich 2024 due to their daughter’s accident during the junior race. Now we know that despite this, there will be mourning in the heart of the cycling world – an 18-year-old died in hospital as a result of her injuries.

Yesterday, after the junior competition, we received information that one of the race participants, Swiss Muriel Furrer, suffered in a dangerous accident and had to be transported to hospital by helicopter. Subsequent reports about the 18-year-old seemed to be optimistic – the operation was reported to have been successful, and her condition had changed from critical to serious but stable. However, as it turned out, these were false reports, and Muriel Ferrer died from her injuries on Friday morning.

It is with great sadness that the UCI and the Organizing Committee of the World Championships in Zurich announce the tragic death of the young Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer. With her passing, the cycling community loses a cyclist who had a bright future ahead of her. The young player fell and suffered serious head injuries on Thursday before she was airlifted to hospital

– wrote the UCI statement.

However, the death of the 18-year-old caused considerable controversy. As reported by Swiss Blick this tragedy could have been prevented, or at least made less likely. According to the newspaper, during the junior competition, no rescue operation was observed in the area of the Küsnacht forest where the accident occurred. The rescue helicopter did not land in Küsnacht until about an hour after the end of the race. Apparently, for a long time, no one was aware that the young cyclist was missing on the route, and during the second run, even the dangerous exit was not marked in any way. The organizers did not respond to these allegations.
