Rejecting ‘artificial terrorism’, public movement will continue: Swat Qaumi Jirga

A protest rally under the Swat Qaumi Jirga in Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday unanimously rejected military operations and any kind of ‘sanctioned terrorism’ in the area.

Lawyers, business organizations, various political parties including elected members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf and civil society participated in the rally held in the main market of Swat.

Addressing the rally, the speakers demanded lasting peace in the region and said that Swat is a peaceful region but it is being pushed back to terrorism which is not acceptable in any way.

Swat Qaumi Jirga member Khalid Mehmood said in his address that Swat was not merged with Pakistan so that the state would promote extremism here for its own interests.

“We are being told that there are militants in the mountains of Swat, if that is the case then it is a proof of state failure.”

Khalid Mahmood said, ‘We will not accept any more unrest and extremism in Swat. The child of Swat is aware that this state of Swat has become due to state policies.

Malakand Bar Association President Shamsul Hadi said in his address that the constitution in the state is an agreement between the citizens and the state and people have rights under the constitution.

According to Shamsul Hadi, extremism is not being allowed to end in Swat and this region and today’s rally will be the beginning of a movement for which our legal and constitutional war will continue.

“If the state has failed to end extremism, people will have to rise up against the state policies and find a peaceful solution,” he said.

Pakistan Army’s Public Relations Department (ISPR) chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif clarified in a press conference last month that Resolute Stabilization is not a military operation but a campaign to end terrorism.

He had said, ‘A narrative is being promoted to make stability controversial.’

He said that the civil and military leadership has started this campaign in the entire country under the National Action Plan.

‘This is our battle for survival and we make fun of very serious issues because of politics.’

Swat has been reporting incidents of militancy for the past few months, with the latest incident on Sunday when a security mobile van carrying a convoy of ambassadors from various countries was hit by a roadside bomb.

A policeman was killed in this attack.

A few days ago in Matta, there was an exchange of fire between unknown persons and the police, after which the people of the area, led by the leader of Awami National Party, Ayub Khan Ashad, tried to find the attackers together with the police.

Swat was in the grip of militancy from 2007 to 2011 and during this period the militants had established their dominance here after which the area was cleared through military operations.
