The Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah confirmed this Saturday the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, whom Israel claims to have killed the day before in an intense bombardment against the alleged headquarters of the armed movement in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

“His Eminence Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah, Secretary General of Hezbollah, joined his great and immortal martyrs, whose journey he led for almost 30 years, leading them from victory to victory,” the group announced in a statement, without mentioning the circumstances of the death.

Israel claims it killed Nasrallah on Friday afternoon in a bombing raid on the group’s headquarters, reportedly located under residential buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs known as Dahye.

For its part, Hezbollah has limited itself to announcing Nasrallah’s death in a biographical and condolence statement, without referring to the attack that devastated several residential properties in Dahye.

More than a thousand people have died in Lebanon since Israel intensified its attacks on the strongholds of the Shiite group Hezbollah at the beginning of last week, which have also caused more than 6,000 injuries in about ten days, the Lebanese government announced this Saturday.

The biographical note of Hasan Nasrallah

The text recalls how the Shiite cleric took the reins of the movement in 1992 after his predecessor, Abbas al-Musawi, was killed in an Israeli helicopter attack in southern Lebanon.

Likewise, it highlights that Nasrallah led its ranks during the end of the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon in 2000, the war they waged against the Jewish State in 2006 and, since last October, the support front for Palestine, Gaza and Palestine.
