Pakistani documentary ‘Songs of the Sufi’ wins award at Chicago South Asian Film Festival – Life & Style

Pakistani documentary Songs of the Sufi (SOTS) has been awarded the Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary at the 15th Chicago South Asian Film Festival.

Mystical poetry is a wonderful art form, exploring history, culture and the universal message of love. Jigar Shah, director of the Chicago South Asian Film Festival, said that Shahrukh Waheed and Kamran Anwar have presented this masterpiece on the big screen in a very interesting and divine way.

Shah also highlighted the film as a masterful directorial venture and thanked its makers for bringing the film to the screens.

He said that we feel very good that our film is being appreciated by the audience at home and abroad. “This is our tribute to the art of Qawwali and Qawwali families for keeping this sacred art alive and we want to share it with the world,” said Waheed, the director of the documentary.

He said that we are happy with their response.

We thank the judges and viewers who have recognized the film and hope that the core message of unity, tolerance and inclusion embedded in the message of the great Sufis will continue to light the way,” added producer Anwar.

The documentary explores the glorious tradition of classical Qawwali from the perspective of the Qawwal family as well as music enthusiasts, devotees and scholars. Combining mystical art inspired by renowned Pakistani artists, Mughal miniature paintings, qawwalis, interviews and authentic storytelling, the film offers a captivating cinematic screen experience.
