Cybersecurity researchers discovered a flaw that Allowed you to take control of connected features of Kia vehicles. Dozens of models, totaling millions of vehicles in circulation, were vulnerable to the breach found on a web portal controlled by the automaker.
With just the vehicle’s license plate data, a hacker could bypass the automaker’s connected system to control any registered car. Based on the vulnerability, for demonstration purposes, the researchers developed a cell phone application that allowed them to quickly connect to a model and take control of various functions.
The vulnerability did not allow controlling crucial vehicle systems — such as the immobilizer, which prevents a car from being moved to prevent it from being stolen (even if the key is in the ignition). However, it could be exploited for content theft, harassment of drivers and passengers, and other privacy issues.
