Sardine prices have returned to stability in Moroccan markets, in parallel with a great demand for this product.
According to what was reported by a group of professionals, sardine prices are stable and suit the purchasing power of citizens, and are not rising at the present time, as their price does not exceed 15 dirhams per kilogram.
They recorded that the price of “sardines”, which are in great demand among citizens, ranges between 13 and 15 dirhams, while the prices of some other types reach 120 dirhams, pointing out that the rest of the types, in turn, are in demand when purchased.
They explained that these prices remain within the reach of citizens, and vary according to the quality naturally offered in the markets, stressing that there is a great demand by citizens to acquire fish, after the skyrocketing increases witnessed before.
The same professionals highlighted that there is an increase in demand, in exchange for an also high supply, due to the stability of wholesale fish prices and the end of the “monopoly” that the markets were suffering from in the past.
In response to the issue, an official source revealed that sardine prices are “an open file at the Competition Council,” as the latter had previously announced the start of an investigation into the matter. However, the Competition Council’s investigations require time because they are mainly based on collecting data and information and depend on listening to actors in the sector in question. .
The same official confirmed that once the investigation stages are completed, its results will be officially announced, indicating that the aim of this step is to control competition in the markets and protect the interests of consumers.
