“Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, one life, one song” today on live stream and TV: That’s what the show is about

Philosopher and poet, seeker and questioner, “ladies? man” and monk: Leonard Cohen was a versatile personality. It made him one of the most exciting songwriters. He would have been 90 years old on September 21, 2024. With “Hallelujah” Cohen connected many years of spiritual search for meaning. But when he was finally satisfied with his magnum opus after at least 150 verses, his house label Columbia Records decided not to release the LP in America. What initially plunged Cohen into a deep creative crisis turned out to be the beginning of an unexpected songwriting career. His “Hallelujah” was unstoppable and made it to number one in the charts with the help of covers by John Cale, Bob Dylan and Jeff Buckley. When a very own version of the song appeared in the film “Shrek”, its success could no longer be stopped. Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is now considered an anthem that touches people’s hearts across generations. Using a wealth of previously unpublished archive and interview material, American directors Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller paint a complex portrait of the creator of the world-famous song. “Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a life, a song” combines numerous concert excerpts, from the beginning of his career to his last performance, with interviews from his companions. His long-time partner Dominique Isserman, his producer John Lissauer and Rabbi Mordecai Finley have their say. Leonard Cohen himself reflects on his creative process, crises of meaning and the divine.
