Law officially published in the royal gazette

Thailand legalized same-sex marriage, becoming the third country to Asia in doing it.

The Thai Senate recently approved the same-sex marriage law, which allows same-sex unions, following prior approval in the Lower House.

Equal marriage approved in Thailand

Equal marriage has been approved in Thailand, becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to do so, with the support of both government and opposition parties.

Marriage is defined as the union of two people, without specifying gender, and spouses are referred to as a “married couple” rather than “husband and wife.”

The new law grants LGTBI couples the same rights as heterosexual couples, including those related to inheritance, tax benefits and adoption of children.

Although Thailand has one of the largest and most visible LGBTI communities in Asia, activists criticize that the country’s conservative laws do not reflect the changes and attitudes of society in recent decades.

Activists request that the authorities allow name changes in legal documents to recognize the gender identity of LGTBI people, although there is still no general consensus on this issue.
